A Glasgow chippie has been named the 2009 Fish & Chip Shop of the Year by seafood industry association Seafish.

The Atlantic Fast Food fish and chip shop, which is the third Scottish business to win the competition in as many years, beat off chippies from across the UK to take the coveted title.

Shop owner Giovanni Fionda was named the winner having made it through judging, a customer vote, taste tests, two shop inspections and a presentation to a panel of industry experts.

Chip shops are judged not only on the quality of their product but also their sourcing, customer service, food hygiene, staff training and community spirit.

Fionda said winning the competition as a first time entrant was the best thing to have happened to him in his professional life.

“It has made all the hard work worth it,” he said. “Our team are extremely hard working and it’s thanks to them and our loyal customers that we are taking home this trophy.”

Finnegan’s Fish Bar in Porthcawl, South Wales came second in the competition and Midlands regional winner, Great British Eatery, was third.

Colman’s of South Shields in Tyne and Wear was named the inaugural winner of the Good Catch Award for Sustainability.

The new award aims to further advance sustainable sourcing in the sector by increasing awareness of responsibly-sourced seafood and the practical support available to fish and chip shops.
