Aramark to reduce saturated fat in switch to 1% milk

Aramark has revealed plans to remove 5.5 tonnes of saturated fat from its customers' diets by switching to 1% milk.

The contract caterer will replace its 2.27 litre semi-skimmed milk packs with 1% milk across its onshore business portfolio from 1 March in a move believed to be an industry first.

Approximately 1.4 million litres of the new 1% milk, which has 4.4g less saturated fat than semi-skimmed whilst retaining calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals, will be used in a twelve-month period. It will available for use within food dishes and hot beverage offers across all customer sites.

Val Carter, corporate responsibility director at Aramark, said it was the first time the company had taken steps to de-list a product to be replaced with a healthier alternative.

"The foodservice sector has not yet embraced the use of 1% milk and it is something we are passionate about pioneering," she continued. "This demonstrates our commitment to deliver real tangible health benefits to our customers and supports the Food Standards Agency's ongoing programme which aims to reduce overall levels of saturated fat in the UK diet."

Carter added that there would be no cost implications to customers and the company will look to develop the milk product range further on receipt of initial feedback.
