Forth Bridge and Lake District on list of 11 sites shortlisted for world heritage status

Tuesday 22 March 2011 13:30
Forth Bridge

The UK will nominate 11 places for world heritage status today, including the Forth Bridge and the Lake District.

The Government has been deliberating over which sites Britain should put forward after concern from Unesco that the full list of world heritage sites was dominated by castles and cathedrals in Western Europe.

The selection process included a conscious effort to broaden the geographical spread of the places nominated, which will include a mixture of natural, built and industrial sites:

The 11 places that make up the "tentative list" are:
● The Forth Bridge (rail), Scotland
● The island of St Helena in the South Atlantic
● The Lake District, Cumbria
● The slate industry of North Wales
● The Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire
● Scotland's Flow Country
● Gorham's cave complex, Gibraltar
● Cresswell Crags, Derbyshire
● The Turks and Caicos Islands, West Indies
● Chatham Dockyard and its defences, Kent
● Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof, Shetland

Places that did not make the list include Blackpool, the former RAF airfield in Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, the Rows shops and half-timbered houses in Chester, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway.

The Government made a third attempt to have the area of Kent where Darwin wrote the book that changed the history of science, On the Origin of the Species, included.

The list of sites to be judged now runs to 911 in 151 countries and will take place at the Unesco headquarters in Paris.
