The Mobos move to the Glasgow SECC

Hosting this year’s Mobos – the awards celebrating music of black origin –will boost Glasgow’s economy by £3.6m as punters fill local hotels, bars and restaurants, experts have predicted.

The move to take the Mobos outside London for the first time since their launch in 1996 will be “highly lucrative” for the Scottish city, according to Steven Findlay, senior economist at GEN consultants.

“The 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards injected £8.9m into the Scottish economy,” he said. “Our initial assessment suggests the Mobo awards will inject around £3.6m of fresh income into hotels, restaurants and bars across Glasgow and music and media companies across Scotland.”

The Glasgow City Marketing Bureau had predicted a boost of £825,000 but chief executive Scott Taylor said its figure did not take into account the advertising equivalence of Glasgow being profiled to an international audience of 250m nor the additional post-event benefits.

The Mobos take place on September 30 at the Glasgow SECC.
