How can I get into HR?

Wednesday 16 June 2004 16:16

Question

I've been in the hospitality industry since 1995, my last position being acting restaurant and banquet manager for the Lygon Arms hotel in Broadway, Worcestershire. I would like to know the best way to start working in human resources. I don't have experience in this area, so would I still have a chance?

Answers

Philip Addison, human resources director, Accor Hotels UK & Ireland:

This is a question I'm often asked, and my response is to ask what attracts you to HR. The answer invariably is working with and developing people. Line managers are often much closer to these type of issues than HR as they have direct responsibility for their teams.

However, if you want to break into HR I would recommend that you undertake some part-time study, perhaps a Certificate of Personnel Practice.

You could also contact the professional body the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), where you can get further advice.

Julian Bradwell, human resources director, Greene King Pub Company:

A great way in is the formal approach with the CIPD qualification. This is a well respected and recognised qualification for people already involved with people issues or those wishing to gain entry.

There are several different formats the programme takes, giving it the flexibility around individuals' own circumstances. Contact your own HR department for details. There may be opportunities there that you're unaware of.
