Atul Kochhar, chef-proprietor of London’s Michelin-starred Benares restaurant, has signed a deal to open a restaurant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Caterersearch has learnt.
The move, first revealed by Caterersearch in March, will see Kochhar open a restaurant at the Marriott Central Market hotel in Abu Dhabi, which is currently under construction. The hotel will comprise 58 floors and Kochhar’s restaurant is expected to be sited on the 57th floor.
“It’s very exciting,” he said. “The hotel’s right in the centre and we’re going to put in a Benares style restaurant with about 80 seats.”
The venture has come about as a direct result of Kochhar’s participation in Gourmet Abu Dhabi which took place in the UAE capital in February this year.
The Marriott Central Market hotel is part of the Central Market Project in Abu Dhabi, a complex of three skyscrapers comprising a tower each assigned to residential, commercial and hospitality use.
The hotel has been designed by Norman Foster’s Foster and Partners, famous for its iconic work on buildings like the Reichstagsgebäude in Berlin and hotels like L’Hotel Repulse Bay in Hong Kong and the Four Seasons Tivoli Gardens in Cophenhagen.
Kochhar, the first Indian chef to be awarded a Michelin star, runs Benares, Vatika in Wickham, Hampshire and Ananda in Dublin.
