A Glasgow MP has launched a campaign for the Scottish city to be recognised as the official home of Tikka Masala, one of the most popular curry dishes in the UK.

The move comes just weeks after Birmingham City Council launched a push to protect the famous Balti name by preventing Indian restaurants outside the city from using it.

Glasgow should be given EU Protected Designation of Origin status for Tikka Masala, according to the campaign which is being backed by Glasgow City Council.

Tikka Masala is believed to have been created decades ago in a Glaswegian kitchen by Asian immigrants catering to Western palates.

Mohammad Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Central, has tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons calling for other politicians to back his campaign.

"Glasgow's contribution to popular cuisine deserves to be more widely recognised,” he told the BBC.

"I am very hopeful that the EU will give Chicken Tikka Masala the official stamp of Glasgow origin."
