Contract caterer Compass has won a double deal to operate branded retail outlets at two new-build hospitals, in a deal worth nearly £50m.
The company has signed 15-year contracts with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, following a competitive tender.
From 2011, Compass will operate a new food court at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham including a World Marché, live chef’s theatre, Henry Smiths, bakery and Mondo Subs (Compass’s subway sandwich offer). Both hospitals will also feature Costa Coffee cafés.
Mark Holden, chief executive at Consort Healthcare, the PFI healthcare division of Balfour Beatty which awarded Compass the contracts, said the caterer's proven track record in the hospital retail industry made it the preferred supplier.
He said: “The food court options at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham will provide variety, choice, fresh and healthy food and hot, traditional meals. We hope that visitors, patients and staff will enjoy eating and drinking in this space.”
Lynn King, director of retail, specialist markets at Compass Group UK & Ireland, added: “These contracts mark the first time that Compass has partnered with Consort Healthcare and we look forward to working together in the coming years.”
Earlier this month, Compass’s healthcare division Medirest won a a new £135m contract to provide catering and supply services at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in South London, previously held by Sodexo.
