Bow Street Magistrates Court

Bow Street magistrates' court could become the latest extraordinary venue to house a five-star hotel.

Plans by Irish-based hotel owner and developer Edward Holdings will go on show to the public at the former courthouse this Thursday and Friday (25 and 26 January).

Details include transforming the Grade II-listed site’s 11 cells – which are 10ft by 6ft into rooms designed for independent travellers.

Gerry Barrett of Edward Holdings stressed that Bow Street's unique history would be respected during the building’s redevelopment.

“Bow Street Police Station has stood empty since 1992, and the Magistrates Court is also in need of investment. Our aim is to give these buildings the new lease of life that they clearly deserve,” he said.

Several infamous personalities have previously appeared at the court, including playwright Oscar Wilde, the Kray Twins, Lord Archer and murderer Dr Crippen.

Edward Holdings bought the courthouse and a nearby police station in August 2005 for an undisclosed sum. The company is expected to put in a formal planning application in April.
