Malmaison to launch hotel in Dundee

Malmaison is to open a 91-bedroom hotel in Dundee, as part of the second-largest regeneration project in Scotland.

The new 91-bedroom Malmaison Dundee is being created on the site of the old Tay Hotel, a listed city-centre landmark building, and forms part of the £1b Dundee Central Waterfront Development, which includes a new £45m V&A museum.

Malmaison, which is to take a 35-year FRI (full repairing and insuring) lease with an option to extend for a further 35 years, is working closely with the developer on the project, MEC Services (International). The hotel is expected to be completed by May 2013 and will create 120 new jobs.

Gary Davis, who replaced Robert Cook as chief executive of the MWB-owned Malmaison and Hotel du Vin brands last week, described the Dundee hotel as a "fantastic" project.

"The regeneration on the Dundee waterfront is already under way and we are delighted to have secured the lease on this property that will enable us to create a prestigious hotel on the site," he said.

"My objective is to oversee an expansion of the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin business and we expect that this new hotel will be the first of many for these fantastic brands."

Scotland's first minister, Alex Salmond, said: "MWB's decision to open a new Malmaison in Dundee reflects the significant opportunities for development and growth in the city.

"The announcement demonstrates confidence in the local economy and will bring new jobs to the city. Malmaison has chosen an excellent location in the Dundee Central Waterfront development and I wish them every success as they take forward plans for this impressive four-star hotel."

Malmaison Dundee, which will become the 13th hotel within the group, will be the first Malmaison to open since the launch of Malmaison Aberdeen in November 2008.
