Terry Laybourne to move Café 21

Friday 24 March 2006 10:06

Café 21, one of Newcastle's leading restaurants, is moving to new, larger premises.

Chef-proprietor Terry Laybourne revealed the 75-seat brasserie is moving just 700m to the city's new Trinity Gardens development on the quayside this summer.

The new Café 21 will have 110 seats in the dining room, 24 at the bar and private dining for 30. Average spend will remain at about £25 for lunch and £45 for dinner.

The expansion is being funded from the proceeds of the restaurant and a bank loan.

"We're moving because we turn so many people away at the moment," Laybourne said. "I've been looking for years, but nothing has ever really been right."

Laybourne also revealed he was doubling the size of his quayside bistro, Live, which is part of the Live Theatre complex. The current café and restaurant will expand from 32 seats to 50 and double the size of the kitchen.

"We're going to move the café out of the ground floor and trade more as a conventional restaurant," Laybourne said. Development costs are being divided between the theatre and the restaurant business.
