Keeping staff still a problem in hospitality

Hospitality employers are still finding it hard to retain staff with turnover levels now topping 40% in some organisations, research has revealed.

A survey of 900 employees and 300 employers, by hospitality recruiter The Buzz, showed that 60% of the workers had been in their job for less than two years while 68% planned to change employer.

The most common reason cited for wanting to move was pay (39%), followed by their employer’s culture and ethics (28%), and lack of training (26%).

Staff turnover rates are running as high as 42% for some employers, against an average of 30% reported last year, the survey showed.

Bala Shanmugam, managing director at The Buzz, said career cycles among young workers were “getting shorter all the time” but added that this is spreading to all ages as the idea of long-term loyalty dies out.

“Organisations need to understand what really motivates their workforce and adopt a clearly defined strategy for both recruitment and retention,” he said.

Most hospitality and catering business were still optimistic about the future, with fewer than 10% expecting a recession despite current economic difficulties.
