Swansea restaurant charged with food hygiene offences

Wednesday 22 August 2007 15:29

A restaurant in Swansea has been charged with food hygiene offences, bringing the total number of regulation breaches up to five in the past 12 months.

Chinese take-away the Lotus is the latest restaurant to be charged after food safety officers found food was laid out on dirty tea towels and mouse droppings were found on the floor. A rusty meat cleaver was found which had been used for food preparation.

The owner of the restaurant, Kwok Kam Cheung failed to appear in court but magistrates fined him £9,650 after finding him guilty of nine food hygiene offences.

Jason Rogers, the Environmental Communications Officer for Swansea said that the number of breaches of food hygiene laws in the city was not unnecessarily high.

“Some of the prosecutions resulted from investigations previous to the last 12 months; it can take some time for the cases to go to court.”

In June Altaf Sultan Nanji, 54, former director of the Dolphin hotel, Whitewalls, admitted a series of breaches of hygiene regulations during a hearing before Swansea magistrates.
