JD Wetherspoon has bought the Europa Bar & Grill in central Glasgow from owner Carlo Citti for an undisclosed sum.

The national pub operator plans to invest £650,000 on developing the site at Queen Street station, with 40 new jobs set to be created.

John Hutson, chief executive of JD Wetherspoon, said: "We have enjoyed great success with our pubs in Glasgow and believe that our new outlet will be an asset to the city's social scene."

Jonathan Clough, associate director at Christie & Co which sold the leasehold interest on Citti's behalf, said the centrally-located business attracted many enquires, which led to a number of bids. The bid by JD Wetherspoon was in excess of the asking price.

"We are delighted to have secured a national operator such as JD Wetherspoon for this popular venue, which benefits from high levels of passing trade and tourism, plus a high volume of office workers in close proximity," added Clough.

Carlo Citti currently operates a further four bars and nightclubs in Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, including the student venue, Campus.
