
Starbucks is to undergo a caffeine-fuelled expansion around the world that will see it open 1,800 outlets in 2006.
The US coffee chain, which already buys around 2% of all the coffee produced in the world, says 500 of the new outlets will be outside the US.
The company is making a big push into China – where it already has 200 units - and has appointed a president for the Greater China region, Jinlong Wang.
China is viewed as having the best potential of any market outside the US despite the tradition in that country of drinking tea.
The long-term goal for the company is to have 30,000 stores, half of them outside the US.
It currently has just over 10,000 and opened 1,672 in its last financial year which ended on 2 October.
