The English regions gained six new Michelin stars in the 2008 Great Britain and Ireland Guide, released today.

Nathan Outlaw in Fowey, Cornwall gained one star and – unusually for a debuting restaurant – was also tipped as a two-star restaurant for the future, with two rising stars.

Outlaw is currently in the USA, but Caterer spoke to the privately-owned boutique hotel’s general manager, James Coggan.

“We’re delighted. We’ve always wanted to create a top-class, food-led destination and Nathan has been a big part of achieving that goal. Further more, he’s great to work with and the most unpretentious, down-to-earth chef I know,” he said.

“Last year was our first year and we really learnt a few lessons. We’re looking forward to pushing on again and raising the bar further. Padstow has enjoyed a sprinkling of stars over the years, but this is a new thing for Fowey. The town is really on the up.”

The other non-London based English restaurants to pick up one Michelin star were West Stoke House in Chichester, West Sussex; Apicuis in Cranbook, Kent; Tean in St Martin’s, Isle of Scilly and The Sportsman in Whistable, Kent.

Foraging – why all the attention?

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
