Double win for Jamie Oliver in the Observer food awards

Jamie Oliver scooped two awards in the Observer Food Monthly Awards 2006, yesterday.

The awards, which are sponsored by Waitrose, celebrate companies and individuals that have promoted “good honest food”.

Oliver was judged to have made the Most Outstanding Contribution to the Food Industry, while his TV series Jamie’s School Dinners was voted the Best Food Programme 

Bruce Poole’s Chez Bruce in London was voted the Best Restaurant while North Bar in Leeds took home the Best Bar award.

Other restaurant winners included Fergus Henderson’s St John Bread & Wine in London (for the best cheap eats), Carluccio’s Caffés (Best for Breakfast), Heston Blumenthal’s Hind’s Head pub in Berkshire (Best Sunday Lunch), and London’s Crumpet restaurant (Best for Kids).

The stunning view from the Three Chimney’s restaurant on the Isle of Skye won it the new category of Best Location.

This year’s Hall of Fame title went to Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association.

The judging panel included chefs Gordon Ramsay, Giorgio Locatelli, and Ruth Rogers (of the River Café) alongside former school dinner lady Jeanette Orrery (the winner of last year’s Hall of Fame award), cookery writers and restaurant critics.

Best Cheap Eats: St John Bread & Wine, London
Best for Breakfast: Carluccio’s Caffés
Best Sunday Lunch: Hind’s Head hotel, Bray, Berkshire
Best Restaurant for Kids: Crumpet, Battersea, London
Best Bar: North Bar, Leeds
Best Location: The Three Chimneys, Isle of Skye (new category)
Best food Programme: Jamie’s School Dinners
Best food Book: The Kitchen Diaries by Nigel Slater
Best Retailer: Brindisa, London
Best Newcomer: Bill’s Produce Store in Brighton
Best Producer: Secretts Farm in Surrey
