FSA to screen Japanese food imports for radiation

Food imported from Japan is to be screened for the presence of radioactive material.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is working with port health authorities and other Government departments to ensure that any food imports from Japan, mainly fish and shellfish, do not contain levels of radiation above the legal limit.

Any that is, will be prevented from entering the country.

Only 0.1% of food imports received by the UK come from Japan, but the FSA is having ongoing discussions with the Japanese food authorities, as well as other national food safety authorities and is sharing information and intelligence.

British nationals and visitors in Japan have been provided with food safety advice through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
