Just the one glass? Latest figures reveal that the volume of a single glass of wine served in a pub, bar or restaurant has doubled to nearly half a pint in the past five years.
A survey of 1,100 hoteliers, restaurateurs and publicans by wholesaler King UK revealed that a 250ml glass was the preferred size among retailers and customers.
Only 4% of pubs questioned used the regular 125ml glass, compared with 50% two years ago.
It's not just pubs upsizing, however. The number of restaurants using 250ml glasses doubled in the past two years, and the percentage of hotels using the bigger glass increased from 19% in 2001 to 58% in 2003.
The survey also revealed a marked increase in customers opting for a full bottle of wine rather than a glass. Pitchers of beer and cocktails were also becoming more popular, while the number of double measures of spirits sold continues to rise.
The UK's expenditure on alcohol now stands at £39.5b a year.
