Caterer delivers 4,000 bed tax petitions

Thursday 20 July 2006 00:00

Caterer and Hotelkeeper this week delivered more than 4,000 signed petitions from readers to Sir Michael Lyons, the man heading up the inquiry into the future of local government.

Petitions have been sent in from all over the UK, including hotels, B&Bs, chefs, pubs and restaurateurs.

It has been an amazing response and shows how the Say No To Bed Tax Campaign has united much of the hospitality industry and tourism industries behind a common cause.

Caterer will continue to collect any signed petitions and forward them to the Lyons Inquiry before his final decision on whether a bed tax will be part of his recommendations for local government funding.

In the meantime, Lyons has been left in no doubt as to the strength of feeling about a bed tax in the tourism and hospitality industries.

"I am keen to open the debate on various options around the future of local government function and funding and am reassured to see so many of the catering and hotel sector engaging in these issues," he said.

However, Lyons makes it clear in his Opinion on page 26 that no decision has been made.

"Let me be clear: I have not yet made any recommendations on any tax."

David Weston, acting chairman of the Bed & Breakfast Association that sits on the bed tax steering committee, said: "The B&B association has been very keen to support the campaign and our members have welcomed the opportunity to show Sir Michael Lyons - and the Government - the huge strength of opposition to this iniquitous proposal."
