Borthwick relocates his Plumed Horse to Leith

Thursday 24 August 2006 00:00

The Plumed Horse restaurant in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire, is upping sticks and moving to Leith, near Edinburgh.

The Michelin-starred restaurant will serve dinner for the last time in Crossmichael, near Castle Douglas, on 16 September, with relocation expected to be complete by mid-October.

Chef-proprietor Tony Borthwick admitted that the restaurant had found it tough going in recent months.

"I guess I've had a few reality checks of late. I can't get the staff and, in winter, not enough diners," he said. "If I'm honest, I'm a bit scared of my cosy life. I need to push myself a bit to progress."

Having encountered difficulties trying to sell the business, Borthwick decided to buy out the remainder of his lease in Crossmichael and has taken out a 20-year lease on a property in Henderson Street, Leith.

"We're taking lots of the old kitchen equipment and our front-of-house manager," he said. "There will be no conceptual changes from Crossmichael."
