Florence country house hotel

A picturesque country house hotel in the Lower Wye Valley has been put on the market through Knight Frank.

The Florence country house hotel sits among five acres of woodland and shrub gardens on a hillside overlooking the Wye Valley at Bigsweir.

Marking its nearness to the border between England and Wales, the Offa’s Dyke Trail runs past the rear of the property.

The four diamond-rated guest house dates back to 1566 when it formed part of Lord Sherbourne’s country estate.

It became the first licensed premises in the Lower Wye Valley during the reign of George IV, when it served the bargees as the Cider Inn.

The Florence is made up of two detached stone buildings with exposed beams and leaded light windows.

Along with eight en-suite bedrooms (with four in the cottage), the hotel has three restaurants that will seat a total 56 diners. They include the 16-seat Riverbank, the 24-seat Riverview and the 16-seat Valleyview.

The hotel has planning permission to add a 50-seat function room and a kitchen extension.

Knight Frank is seeking offers in excess of £895,000 for the freehold.
