Sandman Hotel Group enters UK market with property in Newcastle

Canadian company, the Sandman Hotel Group, is entering the UK with the opening of a 175-bedroom hotel in Newcastle next month.

Situated in the former Scottish and Newcastle brewery site at Gallowgate, the four-star Sandman Signature hotel Newcastle will incorporate an on-site pub, the Shark Club Gastro Lounge, and a number of self-catering suites.

General manager is Kevin Gilhooly, who has worked as regional director for eastern Canada with the Sandman Hotel Group, while director of business development is Shireen Rowley.

"The emphasis at Sandman Signature Newcastle is very much on comfort and anticipating and fulfilling the needs of the guest and, having been born and bred in the North-east, I am thrilled the company chose Newcastle for its flagship UK hotel," said Rowley, who previously headed up sales and marketing for Sodexo Prestige at St James' Park and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.

The group currently operates 33 properties under the Sandman Hotels, Inns and Suites upper-mid tier brand and six under its upper tier brand, Sandman Signature Hotels & Resorts. The Newcastle hotel marks the company's first venture outside of Canada.
