Glasgow Licensing Board forced to pay out £12,000

The Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA) has received a £12,000 payout from Glasgow Licensing Board after a successful legal challenge earlier this year.

The payment comes after the SBPA challenged Glasgow’s interpretation of the law, ahead of the start of the new licensing regime in Scotland next year.

Glasgow had been claiming that under the new alcohol laws a personal licence holder would be required to be on the premises at all times when alcohol is served.

The SBPA took its challenge to the Court of Session in Edinburgh in May and although the licensing board changed its stance days before the hearing, the case was heard in court anyway on the subject of costs.

Patrick Browne chief executive of the SBPA said he was glad the issue had now been settled.

“The industry remains fully in support of the process of licensing reform in Glasgow and across Scotland, as long as this is in line with what we believe to be the letter of the law under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 and the regulations associated with that,” he said.
