London Living Wage campaign

Trade union Unite and campaign group London Citizens are again calling on hospitality chief executives, the British Hospitality Assocation and Visit Britain to support them in their campaign for a London Living Wage.

They have today launched a document entitled Rooms for change: Putting London hotels on track for the Olympics in which they outline their recommendations to change employment and management practices of London hotels in time for 2012.

These include adoption of a London Living Wage by London’s hotels; unions to be given unimpeded access to meet with all hotel employees; as well as training and advancement opportunities made available to staff at all levels.

Unite and London Citizens have also called for he provision of English language lessons and a Central London Hotels Agreement (CLHA) to be signed by all hotels, which provides minimum terms and conditions for all workers, including a London Living Wage and ballots for trade union recognition.

Marzena Cichon, community organiser for London Citizens, said: “We are going to focus on arguing the business case for introducing the Living Wage on the basis of KPMG analysis and our research. We are seeking response from industry chief executives, BHA, Visit London, Visit Britain and ODA and government departments.

“On the same day, at 2pm we plan an action outside one of luxury hotels to inform the clients about low wages and state of the hotel industry.”
