The Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London has emerged as the front-runner in the race to build the UK’s first supercasino.
Although a final decision isn’t expected until December, an initial ranking of the bids puts the London site in pole position with 67 points out of 80.
It is followed by Glasgow (66) and Blackpool (65). The 27 proposals were assessed on criteria that included social impact, need for regeneration and community benefits.
The Casino Advisory Panel, which is leading the process, said the recent controversy surrounding Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott’s stay with American property tycoon and Dome-owner Phillip Anschutz had no impact on the decision.
A spokesman said: “There has been no pressure from anyone. Each bid is judged on its individual merits and the process will be as robust as possible so we’re not open to legal challenges.”
