Moscow is the most expensive city in the world to buy a cup of coffee, with the average cup including service, costing Muscovites $5.19 (£2.60).

London ranks tenth on the list, with the average coffee costing $2.20 (£1.10), below cities such as Tokyo, Brussels and Prague.

Paris is the second most expensive city for coffee at $3.45 (£1.73) a cup, Athens third at $3.38 (£1.70), Olympic host city Beijing fourth at $3.20 (£1.60) and Berlin fifth at $2.63 (£1.32).

The figures form part of the Mercer Worldwide Cost of Living Survey 2008, which looks at the comparative cost of living in 143 cities around the world.

Yvonne Traber, a principal and research manager at Mercer, said the research confirmed the global trend for price increases on certain foodstuffs.
