Ex-footballer sells freehouse in Constable country

Shepherd and Dog pub

Former West Ham footballer Julian Dicks has sold his Shepherd & Dog freehouse in Essex to a couple from London.

Built in 1928, the Shepherd & Dog is the only pub left in the village of Langham on the Essex/Suffolk border. Dicks, who was a hands-on proprietor, built up its reputation for serving real ales, bar meals and snacks.

As well as two restaurant areas that can seat 76 diners, the village pub has a two-bedroom owners’ accommodation, car park and beer garden.

New owners Mr and Mrs Virdi from Leytonstone previously ran an off-licence in South Woodford, East London

The Ipswich office of Christie + Co sold the freehold for slightly less than the asking price of £935,000.
