Wiltshire’s Windmill restaurant on the market for nearly £600,000

The Windmill, Wiltshire

Wine entrepreneur Chris Ellis has put his top-end rural restaurant The Windmill in Wiltshire on the market.

Ellis, who founded the Kumala wine brand, wants to concentrate on his new wine shipping business, Crush Wines.

The Windmill is located in the hamlet of Marten, near Hungerford and falls within a golden triangle of top eating establishments in the area that includes Marco Pierre White’s Yew Tree at High Clere and Antony Worrall Thompson’s Angel Coaching Inn at Heytesbury.

Ellis bought the former pub in 2001 and completely revamped it. The restaurant is now run almost entirely by the staff and average spend per head is around £60 for dinner.

“I could see it appealing to a top chef or restaurateur working in London who wants to up sticks and open his own landmark restaurant in this lovely part of the world,” said Ellis. “It’s at the top end of the market and looks great.”

The restaurant comprises a lounge bar, a 45-seat dining room, and new terrace with views of local landmark The Windmill.

The property sits on an acre of land and comes with a three-bedroom flat with a large kitchen/diner and a bungalow.

The Cirencester office of Colliers Robert Barry is seeking £595,000 for the freehold on The Windmill.
