Hospitality lacks skills for Olympics

The UK hospitality industry has too few skilled workers to host the Olympics, say employers.

More than 60% of employers and organisations in the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector believe more skilled workers are needed if London is to host the 2012 Olympic Games, according to a survey published this week.

The news comes as inspectors from the International Olympic Committee are conducting a four-day visit to assess London’s bid for the 2012 Games.

The survey was carried out by People 1st, which advises the Government on leisure, hospitality and tourism. People 1st’s chief executive Brian Wisdom said: “The UK certainly has the capability but we really need to look at the skills issue now if we are to succeed.”

Nearly three-quarters of those questioned said they believed the Olympics would boost tourism, although only just over half saw it as benefiting their business directly.

Meanwhile, another survey released today (15 February) shows that 48% of employers are having difficulties recruiting staff with the right skills. The survey by the British Chambers of Commerce was last conducted in 1994, when it showed only 29% of employees experiencing skills shortages.
