Wind will not be able to snuff out the new Smart Candles from Andy Thornton, which use battery power, intelligent electronics and LEDs to recreate the atmospheric random flicker of real candles without the fumes or the fire risk. This means they can be used either inside or outside restaurants and bars.

The basic kit comprises 12 candles that are each the size of a standard tea light candle (40mm diameter and 50mm high), 12 frosted-glass holders, a power adaptor and a charging base and costs £120. Each candle will provide up to 100,000 hours of LED light, can be recharged more than 500 times, and will glow for 12 to 14 hours after each eight-hour charge.

The Smart Candle range also incorporates a realistic silicone wax candle (155mm high and 85mm in diameter), which is powered by two D alkaline batteries and will last for up to 2,500 hours. The wax candle sells for £14.94.
