Ginger waitress wins payout after abuse and unfair dismissal

A Plymouth waitress who was taunted at work over her red hair has been awarded more than £17,500 in compensation.

Sarah Primmer, who worked at the city’s Rendezvous Café, was subjected to sexual harassment and a series of inappropriate comments by the café’s night manager.

The manager made fun of the colour of her red hair and translated comments into Turkish for the amusement of other members of staff.

“They wanted to know if the colour of my hair matched the rest of my body and thought it was quite funny to laugh about,” said Primmer.

She was then unfairly dismissed from the Rendezvous Café while off work as the employer refused to accept a sick note issued by a doctor.

Primmer was awarded £17,618 in compensation by the Exeter employment tribunal.

The award was made against Mayflower Kebabs, Kemal Koyunco, Malik Aldogan and Laxtone.

Tribunal chairman Christa Christensen described the harassment as “denigrating, highly personal and demeaning”.
