Cheddar remains the nation’s favourite cheese, according to a YouGov poll which placed it 35 percentage points ahead of its nearest rivals in popularity.
The online survey of 2,601 adults found that Cheddar topped the cheese board menu for 41% of respondents.
Brie and Stilton, the next most popular varieties, each attracted just 6% of the votes.
Other cheeses that scored in the popularity stakes included Red Leicester, Wensleydale, Mozzarella, Edam and Cheshire (3% each); Emmental, Camembert, Double Gloucester, Goats Cheese, Roquefort (2%); and Gorgonzola, Parmesan, Cream Cheese, Shropshire Blue (1%).
Comte, Gouda and Mascarpone cheese, on the other hand, won no points at all.
The survey also found that 48% of people surveyed preferred a cheese without a strong smell, a figure that rose to 53% among women compared with 43% of males.
Of the 29% who did prefer a smelly cheese, men (at 33%) proved to be more appreciative than women (26%).
