Up to 20% of jobs are believed to be at risk at Von Essen’s Seaham Hall hotel in Northumberland.

The five-star hotel and spa, located in County Durham, was sold to Von Essen last year and has 100 staff.

Today the company confirmed they were consulting with employees about “restructuring the business”. It is believed that up to 20 jobs are at risk.

The Grade-II listed building is famous for having been the retreat of the Lord Byron, who married at Seaham Hall in 1815.

Although media reports have claimed jobs are at risk, a von Essen spokesman said: “Seaham Hall Hotel can confirm that no redundancies have been made.

“The hotel is in the process of consultations with staff and roles are being considered. Seaham Hall Hotel is looking at restructuring the business and new jobs are to be created in the future.”

The hotel was originally launched by North East entrepreneur Tom Maxfield and his wife Jocelyn, who bought the derelict site and surrounding land in 1997. Maxfield spent more than £20 million converting the former nursing home into one of the region’s most luxurious hotels and restaurants.
