Speaking at the Royal Welsh Show this week, he asked: "Why on earth can't we bring back good, old-fashioned home economics, so children can be taught how to cook and learn about food?"
The comments came a week after a Department for Education and Skills report on catering in schools revealed that children were still opting for "unhealthy" food options at mealtimes.
In the autumn, the Government will publish a healthy-living blueprint setting out what schools can do to improve children's approach to diet.
