Question
I have five years' experience at management level and am looking for a position in London. However, there appears to be a catch-22 situation within the London market in regard to previous experience. Any advice?

Philip Addison, human resources director, Accor Hotels UK & Ireland:
I understand your predicament, and it is one faced by many graduates - not only in the hospitality industry. My advice would be not to undersell yourself but also to be realistic. Perhaps you should stress your experience as much as your qualifications in any applications. Your university experience may not necessarily be fully recognised by all employers at this stage, but if you are able to find a position you should be able to make your mark. The London market moves rapidly, and good people can progress very quickly.
Lesley Reynolds, chief executive, Portfolio International:
I do find this London pretension very frustrating, and I know it is a real issue, however, thankfully it is not prevalent everywhere. My advice would be to stick at it. If you really want London, you will find it. Have you considered contract catering as well as hotels? Do not give in, you will find what you want if you carry on. If you give up now, it will be even harder to get into London later.
