Ampersand wins £60m, five-year deal with Royal Historic Palaces

Ampersand has beaten incumbent operator Digby Trout, which is owned by Elior, and rival caterer Benugo to win the lucrative Royal Historic Palaces public catering deal worth £60m.

The sought-after contract is a massive coup for Ampersand, which was formed last year when parent company CH&Co split Charlton House into five specialist sub-divisions. It is estimated that it will increase the venue and public attraction caterer's annual turnover by a third.

The five-and-a-half-year contract commences in October and sees Ampersand provide the public catering services at the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace, which attract over 3.2 million visitors every year.

Ampersand will launch a new café at Kensington Palace and a waterfront restaurant at the Tower of London. The menus will aim to showcase the best of seasonal British produce while reflecting the history and character of each individual venue.

Danny Homan, director of communication and development at Historic Royal Palaces, said that Ampersand won the highly competitive tender process with a combination of "creativity, innovation and flair".

"Great catering is ever more important to our visitors and staff and this contract is a unique opportunity for Ampersand to make real impact within some of the UK's most popular historic sites," he added.

Alison Tyler, CH&Co's managing director of the commercial businesses, said: "We have been in this sector for the past six years, ever since we first won the business at the Royal Institute of British Architects.

"It is only a year since we rebranded CH&Co and launched Ampersand as a specialist brand. Winning this contract is an endorsement of our great team, creative food ideas, service standards as well as our sales and marketing expertise."
