A majority of Scots support the Scottish Executive’s plans to ban smoking in enclosed pubic places such as pubs and restaurants, according to new research.
Of those surveyed 56% were in favour of the measure that will see a ban in place by the summer of next year.
Three-quarters (74%) of those surveyed agreed action was required to reduce people’s exposure to passive smoking and second-hand smoke, which the vast majority (83%) believed was harmful to health.
Scottish Executive health minister Andy Kerr said: “The Bill is the most important piece of public health legislation in a generation and widespread understanding is vital.”
The Scottish Parliament will vote on the bill on Thursday, which, if accepted, will pave the way for the new law.
