Banker from Asia replaces Tim Scoble as chief executive of Guoman

High-flying banker in Asia Mike DeNoma has been appointed chief executive of Guoman Hotels.

An American citizen, Noma is moving to the UK to take up his new position on 1 August, replacing Tim Scoble.

Until recently, from 2009, DeNoma was chairman, president and chief executive of Chinatrust Commercial Bank, one of Asia's first international Chinese financial institutions. Previously, from 1999 to 2009, DeNoma was chief executive of the Global Consumer Bank at Standard Chartered.

Earlier in his career he was the founder and chief executive of two nationwide companies in China and held senior executive positions with Hutchison Whampoa, Citibank and PepsiCo after starting his career at Procter & Gamble.

DeNoma said: "This group of hotels and the talented team running them provide a great platform from which to market and ultimately expand the portfolio on to the world stage. I am excited at the challenge and opportunity that lies ahead and to be a part of the brand's future success."

Quek Leng Chan, executive chairman of Guoco Leisure, of which Guoman Hotels is a subsidiary, said he expected DeNoma, who is known as a leading brand marketer, to help with the transformation of Guoman Hotels. "We believe his sterling track record in creating sustainable brands will help in positioning the company in the forefront of its industry and creating a formidable and differentiated challenger."

Guoman Hotels operates two hotel brands: the de luxe collection of Guoman Hotels in central London and the Thistle Hotels chain of full-service hotels in the UK and Malaysia.

Guoman Hotels' five London properties include Charing Cross, the Cumberland, the Royal Horseguards, the Tower and the new addition, the Grosvenor Hotel in Victoria. Meanwhile, Thistle, which is currently undergoing a five-year investment programme, has 32 hotels across the UK.
