Strong summer trading has boosted sales at Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries (W&D).

In a trading statement today, the company said like-for-like sales in the 51 weeks to 23 September were 2.4% ahead of last year at its 457 managed pubs.

W&D credited the good summer weather and World Cup for the performance, with like-for-like sales in June and July 6.7% up on the same period a year ago.

Its tenanted division, the Union Pub Company, now has 1,898 pubs following transfers in the year from its managed estate and the purchase of Celtic Inns.

W&D said average profit per pub at Union is estimated to have increased by approximately 5% during the 51-week period.

The company is currently targeting growth in market share in the premium ale market for its Marston’s Pedigree and Old Empire brands through sponsorship of the England Cricket Board.
