From January 2012, the old workplace medical kits (BHTA-HSE kits 10, 20 and 50) that were introduced in 1981 will be replaced by a new standard, BS8599-1, that brings the UK into line with most European member states.
Designed by industry experts to cover employees in most workplace environments, the new kits cover a wider range of products than before and include a guide to help employers match their risk assessment to the kit contents.
Changes include increased quantities of plasters, wipes and gloves; smaller dressings for finger injuries; foil survival blankets to keep patients in clinical shock warm; paramedic shears to remove clothing around wounds; gel-soaked burns dressings; and resuscitation devices to protect first aiders from infection.
