Indian restaurant owner hospitalised after attack

The owner of an Indian restaurant in Leicester was so badly beaten by customers that he was hospitalised.

Devinder Singh, of the Haveli Bar and Restaurant, was knocked to the ground and beaten by a group of 12 men as they left the restaurant.

The men had been a part of a group of 30 who had been at the restaurant all evening.

Mr Singh explained that he had refused to serve a number of the men any more alcohol because he considered they were drunk.

It was as the group was leaving that a dozen of them returned to attack him.

Mr Singh said: "I was getting ready to close after they left when suddenly they ran at me.

"About five or six came at me from behind and another five or six from the front. I couldn't believe what was happening.

"I shouted to the staff to call the police and pull the metal shutters down to trap the men inside. But one of the men grabbed hold of the waiter and held the shutters open while the others left.”

After the attack Mr Singh initially managed to make his way home but he collapsed there and was taken to hospital where he was detained overnight for observation.

A Police spokesman said an investigation was under way and it was hoped to bring the attackers to justice.
