Botanic Inns singled out as one of FT's best workplaces

Thursday 28 April 2005 13:24

Belfast-based Botanic Inns has come up trumps with a ranking of 35 in this year’s Financial Times Best Workplaces special report.

This is the highest placing by a hospitality business in the list of 50 UK companies that were voted by their employees as good places to work.

Founded in 1991, the pub group employs 460 people and was singled out for its training programmes, bonuses and pay rise rewards for successful training completion.

Stress management is available for all managers, focus groups and monthly meetings spread information, and basic computer training is offered in conjunction with the Workers Education Association.

Employees praised the company for “really good community involvement” and cross-company work with charities.

Hilton UK & Ireland were second in line at number 39.

The Watford-based hotel group was praised for its extensive training initiatives, open discussion amongst management and a strong approach to disability awareness.

One employee said: “A fun approach to learning, the environment and more recently charitable causes make staff think about the bigger picture.”

The third hospitality business to be included in the list was Suffolk-based brewer Adnams positioned at number 48.

The business runs several pubs, two hotels and a wine shop, employing 300 people.

It was classed as “a values-led organisation”. One member of staff said that everybody knew who everyone was.

“We are openly encouraged to put forward ideas, needs and discussions with managers and directors.”

At a European level, Clontarf Castle Hotel in Ireland was also mentioned, as was food producer Danone, drink supplier Diageo in Spain and Ireland, Greek food and beverage producer Elais and Hilton’s Dublin hotel.
