Eagerly awaited new standards for school meals in England will be published on the 8 May, according to sources close to the School Foods Trust.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly is understood to be preparing to reveal details on both sets of new standards for school meals as soon as 8 May.

Caterers have been on tenterhooks as the food-based standards are due to come into force in the next academic year. At the same time Kelly will release details on the more complicated nutrient-based standards that primary schools will adopt in 2008 and secondary schools in 2009.

Expected to endorse the Schools Meals Review panel’s recommendations from last year, the food-based standards will restrict school kids in England to eating chips or fired food no more than twice a week.

The nutrient-based standards take a far more scientific approach to school meals than the food-based stop-gap values.
