St Kew Inn pub

The pub is among 21 icons chosen for a list of national treasures.

As part of the scheme, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, more than 300,000 people have voted for their favourite icon of Englishness on www.icons.org.uk

The massive list of nominations will eventually be whittled down to just a 100 icons and announced at the end of the year.

The pub joins other hospitality institutions such as the Savoy hotel, Marston’s Pedigree bitter and the Midland Grand hotel, St Pancras, on the nominations list.

More bizarre options include the hedge, routemaster buses, flushing toilets and boiled eggs with soldiers.
