Glastonbury's caterers escape worst of the storm

Tuesday 28 June 2005 10:56

Caterers at last weekend's Glastonbury festival escaped the worst of the floods which submerged parts of the Somerset grounds after storms struck.

More than 340 traders were operating at the festival and the majority were able to continue trading throughout, despite performances being delayed.

Dick Vernon, the festival office manager, said: “We had a lot of good housekeeping procedures, and these helped us survive what can only be described as a monsoon. Simple things such as properly securing gas canisters meant the damage was limited.”

After initial health and safety and fire risk assessment checks prior to the arrival of the festival-goers, several traders had to be re-visited after the flooding, and four were temporarily unable to continue trading.

The campsite bore the brunt of the flood, and fire services pumped out more than three million litres of water which had covered hundreds of tents.
