London Living Wage protest at Hyatt Andaz hotel

Hotel workers are set to protest outside the Hyatt Andaz hotel on Liverpool Street in London this morning over demands for a London Living Wage.

The protest, organised by campaign group London Citizens, will involve waitress, valets and cleaners, who all get paid the current national minimum wage of £5.52 an hour.

Employees will be seeking a London Living Wage, which London Mayor Boris Johnson raised to £7.45 an hour earlier this month.

Sarfraz Jeraj, London Citizens’ Living Wage campaign spokesman, said: “Mark Hoplamazian, chief executive of Global Hyatt Corporation, has claimed that Hyatt embraces a ‘spirit of mutual respect’ with all the people it employs. The cheapest room at the Hyatt costs £335 a night and the lowest paid staff are on £5.52 an hour. This is disrespectful.

“We call on the Hyatt to ensure immediately that all staff, including agency employees, are paid a living wage of £7.45. Anything else is a poverty wage according to City Hall, and breaches the principles which Mr Hoplamazian claims to uphold.”

Protestors will gather outside the hotel from 7.30am to 8.30am.
