Celebrity chef James Tanner has given a young catering student a golden opportunity to do a trial at his restaurant.

Tanner, owner of the Plymouth Barbican Kitchen Brasserie, spotted James Julian in the Nestlé Toque D’Or competition in Birmingham.

Julian, who is studying at Sussex Downs College, came to Tanner’s attention after he made up a rap about his food, according to Eastbourne Today. He also approached Tanner for advice following the competition.

As a result, the chef offered the student a three-month trial placement at his restaurant which could lead to a permanent position.

The 19-year-old spent three years studying at the college. He has completed an NVQ level two fast track, a bakery course and NVQ level three. He has also been named the college's Most Promising Chef of the Year.

Julian has lived at Eastbourne Foyer since 2007. The Leonard’s Road accommodation provides support for young, single homeless people aged 16-25 who are committed to training and improving their lives.

Foyer manager Bob Mayfield said: "Everyone at the Foyer is proud of James's achievements.

"Throughout his stay at the Foyer he has shown enthusiasm to learn and develop and it has been a privilege to watch his progress.

"We wish James the best of luck in his new career and are looking forward not only to seeing him in the future but to also return to the Foyer to show us his cooking skills."
