Derek Andrew: link-up with Travelodge will give customers 'best of both worlds'

Pub chain Marston’s and hotel group Travelodge have announced plans to co-locate future sites in order to capitalise on increased demand from business customers.

Marston’s and Travelodge are this week writing to over 100 landowners and developers to express their interest in finding at least 10 more properties across the country.

Derek Andrew, managing director of Marston’s Inns and Taverns, said the joint initiative would deliver “excellent” value to new and existing customers.

"This joint initiative will deliver a combination of excellent value pub and hotel accommodation, giving our customers the best of both worlds at the same location,” he said.

Paul Harvey, managing director for development at Travelodge, said the collaboration would enable it to develop sites that wouldn’t be viable to open alone.

“With an ever increasing number of business customers staying with us, to compliment our city centre growth we are also looking for opportunities near to out of town retail and industrial areas. By working together I am sure we will both be able to meet our development requirements."

The joint initiative follows the development of a 57-bed Travelodge hotel next to a 6,500 sq ft Marston’s family pub in Wincanton which are due to open together early next year.

The companies are in the process of securing two further A road sites this year which are approximately one acre in suburban and out-of-town locations.

Travelodge has also announced plans this month to communicate offers, hotel openings and job opportunities to its customers via the social messaging service Twitter.

“Over 85% of Travelodge reservations are conducted via the web so it makes sense to interact with our customers via Twitter,” said Travelodge e-commerce director Charlie Herbert.
