Facebook and Twitter users have voted the traditional British cream tea staple of scones, cream and jam as the UK’s Signature Treat.

The vote was organised by Dawn Foods this week to mark British Food Fortnight (17 September to 2 October) after the bakery supplier realised that the UK lacked a signature treat.

“Whilst America has the donut, France the croissant and Spain the churro we couldn’t decide what treat the UK was known for – so we decided to find out”” said marketing manager Jacqui Passmore.

Dawn’s Sweet Treat UK campaign asked UK Twitter and Facebook users to pick their top treats from a shortlist of 13 options.

Scones, cream and jam attracted 41% of the vote, streets ahead of the second-placed Victorian Sponge chosen by 27% of participants. Trendy cupcakes came in third with just 9% of the vote while the cream horn was the least popular choice.

“We’ve seen sales of our scone mix significantly rise this year and this, coupled with the news last week that commercial sales of scones have risen by 65%, is proof that that UK is rallying round its own signature treat and using it as an affordable indulgence during the current economic climate,” said Passmore.
